She couldn’t sleep.
It was a not so little secret that professional wrestling had turned Nina Stokes into a chronic insomniac; she’d spoken about it many times in the past. What brought about the change? She had her suspicions, but she couldn’t tell you flat out. All she knew was that it hadn’t always been that way for her. Had it been her college and teaching days, she would have knocked out like the rest of the world. But alas, those days were long gone.
Her mom attributed the insomnia to anxiety. Nina dismissed that notation. That theory might have been viable early on in her career when she was struggling to make name for herself. What was her excuse now? Her inability to rest at night ran its course through battles with Veronica Taylor and Elijah Black in Hard Knox Wrestling. It ran its course as she faced XPJ, Michael Alexander, and Jackson Magnum during her historic HKW Lionheart Championship reign. It ran its course as she traveled the world tangoing with Marisol Hawkes in Carnage Wrestling, Gwendolyn Massey and Zoey Adler of East Coast Wrestling Federation fame…
Her life was going great. Her career was fantastic—it left little room for anxiety.
So what was the cause?
Professional Wrestling made Nina think and pondering upon things. More so than university did; more so than her career as a English teacher did. In terms of wrestling and her profession, her brain was always in constant flux. “What can I do to make sure my strikes are more deadly?” “Which techniques could I employ to make sure I don’t get out-wrestled and caught slipping while on the mat?” “What do I need to do to at this point to improve my cardio?” “How can I get better in the ring?”
Those question often led to one answer—getting back to work and getting back into the ring.
She channeled that insomnia into early morning workout sessions. Some cardio work. Some striking work. Some mat and Jiu Jitsu practice. Anything she thought would give her an edge.
Nina’s sleep pattern had gone back to normal the past six months or so. She still trained (when she’d been physically cleared). Wrestling was still on her mind a lot. However, she wasn’t in the trenches like Ryan, Artemis, or Misha.
But all that changed with the announcement of the KAMIKAZE Pro Tag League. Phoenix Wrestling’s Boats ‘N Throws was her dipping her toes into the water; KAMIKAZE Pro’s Tag League was her jumping right back into the deep in…
And she was thoroughly excited.
The unsettled spirit inside of her had been begging to slip out, pleading her to release it from its cage. She’d been hesitant, but she ultimately obliged. Nina hoped that this Japanese tour would satisfy and stave off the spirit’s hunger.
It was a dangerous gamble. It was also a lose-lose situation in the end; Nina knew that.
Best case scenario, the Tag League satisfied her hunger for a short while. The other case scenario? The Tag League would not be enough. The bars to that spirit’s cage would be snapped, and she’d run rampid looking for opponents to devour.
A dangerous gamble indeed.
“Meh,” Nina said to herself as she finished her set of sit-ups. “Guess I’ll cross that bridge when I get there.”
Her partner for the KAMIKAZE Pro Tag League?
None other than the world renown Fujiko Mine.
Former Ladies All-Star Wrestling Champion. Former Frontier Grappling Arts Mid-Atlantic Legacy Champion. Former FGA Pride Champion. Amazing talent. Good friend. Practically a family member…
This venture was going to be a blast.
After finishing her set of sit-ups, Nina grabbed a nearby towel and dried off her face. She took a moment or two to rest before she made it to her feet. She then proceeded to advance towards the locker room so that she could change into her running gear. There was further work to be done.
