She stirred and tossed in her sleep. Her wife draped her right arm over here in an instinctive manner. Ryan was were eternal protector, even in the realm of the subconscious. It brought a small smile to Nina’s lips as she gently caressed her wife’s arm before she pulled away and rolled out of the bed.
“Where are you off to?” Ryan didn’t bother to open her eyes. Her face exuded a state of serenity as she continued to lay in the bed.
“I’ll be right back boo,” Nina said as she leaned forward and gently kissed her lips. “Just going to go wash my face.”
“Hurry back,” Ryan said in lackadaisical manner.
Nina ran her fingers through her wild bed-hair as she made her way from the bedroom to the outside hallway. She felt a bit nippy; her black sports bra and boy-short combination gave her little protection against house’s inner air. The house and her must have been on the same wave length; a gentle hum resonated throughout the house as the heating system kicked on a moment or two later.
She heard the pitter-patter of tiny paws. Nina’s tea-cup Yorkie, Boobie Miles, aggressively peered his head of the guest room he’d been resting in. His big brown eyes softened when he spotted his mama walking down the hall. He pulled himself back into the room laid back down.
Not wanting to wake up Ryan, Nina closed the bathroom door and flicked on the lights as soon as she arrived there. Her hands migrated to the water knobs—a whole lot of hot, a tad bit of cold. After the water’s temperature had settled Nina cupped her hands. A tiny pool of formed. She leaned in towards the sink and drenched her face in the warm water. The process was repeated a number of times until she grabbed a large white face-cloth to dry off with. She tossed newly dampened towel into the wastebasket.
For the time, she was able to lift her head and glance into the mirror. An image of her peered back at her—an imperfect image. A skewed image.
The woman that stared back at her wasn’t sleep with wild hair. A gnarly, faded scar ran from the top of her forehead down to her left eye. In fact, the entirety of her face and upper body was coated with similar cuts and scrapes. It was as if the the figure in the mirror had just been transported from hellacious battle. A devilish grin beamed from ear to ear.
It sound like her voice. Almost. There was more bass in it. It was deeper, lower. And it was a lot more gruff; a grungy distortion.
“Geez,” Nina said rubbed her eyes a bit. “Now I’m seeing and hearing shit? That cheesecake must have been bad.”
Her comments elicited a hearty laugh from the figure in the mirror.
Nina let out a sigh as she glanced back at the mirror. “Who are you?” she asked.
The figure shook its head.
The woman in the mirror lifted up her left arm. A more visible scar ran the length of her bicep. Nina’s eyes darted down to her very own arm. A scar of the same visibility ran the course of her bicep.
It took Nina a bit of time to respond. “Yeah.” Her eyes dropped to her floor a couple of seconds.
The scared woman let out another ghastly laugh for about twenty seconds. Afterwards, that laugh faded off.
Nina’s facial muscles twitched a bit before her eyebrow rose up. “Why what?”
A feral growl emanated from the figure. Unafraid and undeterred, Nina shook her head.
“I was just trying to keep us safe. Yeah, the doc said the arm was good to go. And sure, it’s been like it’s been at one percent for a while now. But a lot of critical injuries are self inflicted. I didn’t want to fuck up by returning to early, you know?”
She nodded her head, convinced of her own words. “And Boats ‘N Throws? It wasn’t intended to be a tease. It was a once in a lifetime opportunity. A chance to wrestle for a promotion that I had watched heavily in college, a chance to to work for a promotion that has contributed so much to this sport. I HAD to do it—I would have kicked myself had I passed it up!”
There was a stillness in the room.
Both sets of eyes narrowed as the two glared at each other.
“You aren’t in a position of power. You aren’t in control here,” Nina said. “We might be two sides of one coin, but that power and control belongs to me.”
That feral growl returned for a moment. It was then replaced by a lonesome sigh.
Nina let out a sigh of her own.
“Just chill for a bit,” she said. “I know the ring is calling you, me. I hear it myself, and I’ve been looking and weighing options. Cool out for just a while longer. In the meantime, I’m working on getting a few matches in Japan, alright?”
That stillness lingered.
There was quick flash. The next thing Nina knew, she was holding the side of her head. As she glance back in into the mirror, she saw her own reflection. A perfect reflection. “Damn it,” she said as she leaned her arms against the sink.
“Nina, are you alright?” she heard Ryan say from the outside.
“Yeah. Yeah, I’m fine babe.”
“Where are you off to?” Ryan didn’t bother to open her eyes. Her face exuded a state of serenity as she continued to lay in the bed.

“Sup, boo boo?”
“Geez,” Nina said rubbed her eyes a bit. “Now I’m seeing and hearing shit? That cheesecake must have been bad.”
Her comments elicited a hearty laugh from the figure in the mirror.
“Seeing and hearing shit? You think I’m a figment of your imagination or something? Nawww!”
“Damn! Has it really been that long, boo? Don’t tell me that I’m completely unrecognizable? It’s only been a few months, and yet you act like you don’t even know me.”
“Hold on a sec. I guess all the cuts are fucking you up. Maybe this will jog your memory a bit.”
“That’s right. You and I are the very same, boo boo. Well, almost. I’m the one the steps into the ring, the one that gets unleashed on people. You member me, don’t you?”
“Oh yeah, you member. And the look on your face? Kind of priceless.”
“Let me ask you something—why?”
“Why have you forgotten me? Why have you kept me locked away behind a padlock? Hmm? Hmmmm!? We’ve been cleared and ready to get back on the battlefield for months, and yet you keep me on the fucking sidelines.
“No, actually that aint exactly true, is it? Naw, the truth is you kept me locked away for months before giving me just a little taste—that Phoenix Wrestling event. You let me out to run wild for one night and one night only. And hell, we almost won that battle royal. I was hungry! Victory was on the tip of my tongue.
“But that event, it was just a ploy, wasn’t it? You didn’t want me to stay out of my chains and padlock for good. No—you wanted to TEASE me. And I HATE being teased.”
“I was just trying to keep us safe. Yeah, the doc said the arm was good to go. And sure, it’s been like it’s been at one percent for a while now. But a lot of critical injuries are self inflicted. I didn’t want to fuck up by returning to early, you know?”

There was a stillness in the room.
“Do you know how much that match hurt me? To come THAT close to winning the whole thing, only to be tossed back in my cage and left alone again? These twitch streams are nice and all, but I need more. I need more!”
“You aren’t in a position of power. You aren’t in control here,” Nina said. “We might be two sides of one coin, but that power and control belongs to me.”
That feral growl returned for a moment. It was then replaced by a lonesome sigh.
“Look, I NEED to get out there. And in your heart, you know it’s the right thing to do. Your cousin Akira doesn’t leave his spirit locked away. And your gramps damn sure didn’t.
“I’ve got to get out. I don’t care if it’s a couple more one-offs, a small tour. I just need something, anything.”
Nina let out a sigh of her own.
“Just chill for a bit,” she said. “I know the ring is calling you, me. I hear it myself, and I’ve been looking and weighing options. Cool out for just a while longer. In the meantime, I’m working on getting a few matches in Japan, alright?”

“Good, good.
“Don’t forsake me, please.”
