“I swore I wouldn’t cry.”
A few droplets raced down the jawline of Johnny Rebel’s face. It was a stark contrast from the usually degenerate disposition that the Phoenix Wrestling Hall of Famer usually portrayed.
“Seriously, this isn’t me.”
It really wasn’t. The beginning of Rebel’s career was shrouded in endless harassment and taunts reserved only for the duds of the wrestling world. The put-downs penetrated deep in his soul and was almost certainly the reason for Rebel’s nefarious mouth. Every person has a limit for how much poking and prodding that they can take and Johnny waded knee-deep in the fall-out over the years.
But something was different about these tears.
Death wasn’t something that phased Rebel. Truthfully, it was a miracle that Johnny could even walk at this stage of his career – the multitude of brawls had taken their toll on his body… and it showed.
However, this particular gravestone wasn’t an easy destination. If anything, this would be the closure that Rebel desperately needed. Hundreds of sleepless nights gave birth to hazy afternoons and the cobwebs had begun to take residence amongst his thoughts. Clarity was necessary and perhaps visiting the final resting place of Rebel’s one, true love – Sarah O’Brien would provide the simplicity Rebel was searching.
“I’m sorry I haven’t visited,” Rebel mumbled. “I know I should have come before this. You know what… I can’t. I’m sorry. I can’t. I just can't.”
Rebel knelt down to sprinkle a few rose petals across her grave before rising back up to his feet and turning his back on his deceased lover. The only thing that was constant about Johnny Rebel was that anything that had the unfortunate privilege of getting close to him would eventually perish. All throughout his life things would come and go – specifically, people. The only two that ever managed to stick around was Legacy… and Sarah.
And she was nothing but a distant memory now.
With his back turned, he managed to whisper a final parting and away he went. And for one final time the sun set over the life and career of "Simply Fucking Put" Johnny Rebel.
