OUTBACK RULES

The cameras opened to a heightened level of brightness as the camera lens slowly adjusted to a better viewing. Glaring around, there was nothing but open land. Fields of dried corn stalks that starved heavily for water. You could see the pavement bubble up from the dry heat as it was bouncing from off of it. Waves and waves of heat, alarming one of just how hot the surface was and just how hot it was out here, but to someone like Masaru, who sat calm as ever in that same, dusty, dirty old black trench jacket, it was as if it wasn’t hot enough. His Owl of a friend, Olly, danced at his side, more of looking for shade than dancing but he went in a circle twice.
“What you looking for buddy? Hm?”
Maz watched curiously at his friend look around before completely using his head and spinning around the complete three hundred and sixty degree range before returning slowly. Maz didn’t see anything pop so he shrugged off as he picked up what was a piece of cardboard on a stick, with the words, “W!LL G!V3 H3AD 4 R!D3!!!” weirdly spelled with numeric values and punctuation marks in place of the vowels.
Holding it high, waiting for the next passerby to drive by, hopefully at slow speeds to see the magic marker written cardboard stick. Into the lens came hopping a care-free bunny, ears tall and perked up, seemingly lost as this blazing, unhealthy heat was hitting strong as one hundred and ninety proof bottle of Everclear, straight.
“Look Olly! You got a bunny friend!”
It seemed as just as he finished saying that, the Owl’s head spun around like before and it immediately made a beeline right for the bunny but the quick, snapping awareness of the bunny managed to dodge Olly’s swipe with his claw. The bunny continued taking off as those huge ‘button’ eyes seemed to grow even huger with Olly riding over top of him.
“Ooh, rather enemy ... I should’ve said! Okay then! Foooood!”
Masaru watched on in hilarity as his pet Owl chased endlessly after what was a much faster, agile rabbit. He watched his friend fly ferociously through the heat to capture what was food to it. Maz tilted his head, that sadistic smile coming into play as he watched for some traffic to come through.
“Olly is fighting for his meal! He’s learning to take every opportunity available and capitalize on it. That rabbit is quick, agile, and aware but he can be indecisive and that is where Olly will snatch that bunny’s life right before his eyes. His one step of indecisiveness will end him dearly. Olly, those claws wreak havoc. His smartness wreaks havoc. You can outmaneuver him and hide in small places but best believe, the smarts, the senses, they come in handy and with that, you can’t hide. I don’t have to worry about Olly. Olly knows his way back. He knows that if I find us a ride, he will get that sense and make his way back for me. We’ve grown that close.”
Maz raised his right hand, showing his index finger as he pointed with that smile still on his face.
“That’s why Miss Aurora and I work so well as a team and it is why we have excelled quicker as a team than others who have been together longer for months or even years. We just “clicked”. We have similar styles. It’s not about the fancy footwork or the showmanship to get the crowd behind you. We don’t care about nothing but breaking our fists into your face and watching you crumble. Methodical approach, never to be out-thought.”
“It doesn’t matter who, from bitter, tiny temper tantrum-esque people and their nothingness partners to the funky homosapien who believes he’s the true King of the Castle that is Phoenix Wrestling. I understand, ego is a powerful drug, much more powerful and destructive than coke. I understand though, I can function that much of an understanding King...Cassius. You are the “Game Changer” to Faith and Chris’s hopes that they will get one over us. You’ve got their spirits riding pretty high. Going to be a shame to see it all fall.”
Maz had risen to his feet as he spotted that of an older-modeled vehicle making its way towards him at a subtle pace. An older modeled two-door Oldsmobile slowly came to a halt as Masaru, weird as he looked, holding up that sign managed to get the car to stop or maybe rather not wanting to commit a Hit-And-Run case. Either or, Masaru had gotten the driver’s attention as he came around to the driver’s side, steady holding the sign up as the man worked to decode the text written.
“I will give head for ...a ride?”
Masaru slowly thought about what he wrote, not very much into agreeing with what he wrote until quickly changing his mind process and nodding immediately with an assuring smile, showing his yellowish teeth.
“You up for it?”
Masaru followed through with the question as it was pondered for a moment by the young Mexican guy, who didn’t say anything but yet nodded his head, in favor of it.
“So grateful of you!”
Masaru said as he held a gradual smile on his face. Reaching over to where he sat, he grabbed his few items which he placed in the heavily wrinkled bag as he made his way over to the awaiting car. He cupped his hands around his mouth as he screamed out “OLLY!” to which as he explained earlier, Olly was right there at the call of his name. It took a moment but he was there and perched on Maz’s right shoulder.
He went to grab the handle of the passenger-side door and at that very moment, the rear tires spun heavily as smoked filled the scene until the smoke was thick. The loud screeching of the tires on the pavement matched the howling scream of pure pain that came through the mouth of Masaru. Letting loose of the car handle as the Oldsmobile took off, it became clear once the smoke fizzled out, the heavy-imprinted tire marks were seen on Maz’s boots as he fell to the ground, screaming in pain from having his right foot get ran over. Olly was on the ground next to Maz as Maz yelled in pain to absolutely no one.
“FUCKING FUCK!!!” Maz continually screamed as he rolled to his left multiple times, rolling onto the off-road.
Rolling onto his belly, he hobbled off the one good leg, the left in what was like a “Push-Up” position. He struggled mightily but he didn’t stop. He bounced up, gathering his hop as he got over to the old wooden posts that were there. Leaning there, he was seething with anger after that attempt failed.
“I should’ve just used my straight-razor to get the job done! YOU SEE WHAT I HAVE TO DEAL WITH IN THIS WORLD, OLLY? YOU SEE NOW, YOUNG ONE? People are EVIL! I gave a FAIR offer and got fed a very, very raw deal. My fucking foot is a painful mess. This is why I’m so glad this is the last time in Mexico. I hate it here!”
“This is all your fault, Faith and Chris! Yes, you two. This is all your fault. Just because you couldn’t defeat us, you rather make my life a living hell. You don’t mess with Rori because you know what she’s about but me, I’m the unbalanced, unstable one. My metrics are skewed and you feel you have the advantage against me and I get it, if I were partnered with someone to face a tandem like Aurora and Myself, I’d be trying to play games too with the ‘weakest link’, but sadly, that trick is no good.”
“At Redemption 108, you can consider yourselves fucked. No, not funked. Fucked. Cassius won’t be able to help you achieve victory. The same thing that happened at Tempest will happen again this time around. Again, again and ... again.”
Looking up at the clouds that covered the bright Sun, he winced in pain as he chuckled out loud.
“Ain’t life just great??”
Masaru continually tended to his sore foot as he tried to work on putting weight on it again. Kicking it outwards as the camera lens panned out, the scene slowly grew dimmer as Maz and his bird continued to try and find their way to their destination.
