All of a sudden, life was looking great for Chris Andrew. Which is surprising, considering that the reason for this new found joy was stepping away from competition. Not completely of course, his schedule was still pretty busy, last week he wrestled in Toronto, twice on the same card, just to keep the good old habit of overworking... But finally leaving that place he won't even name was relieving to say the least. Even though part of him would forever be grateful to that man he grew to hate recently, he couldn't forget that he was the first one to believe in him , giving him an opportunity in this business. Things went south recently, a lot of stuff he couldn't ignore happened and he decided it was his best interest to walk away, after delighting his fans one last time with a great 2 out of 3 falls match against the reigning champion, Stacy Sterling, someone he respected.
With all that extra free time, he started delving into an aspect of wrestling he deliberately ignored until then. Tag Team.
He always considered himself more of a single wrestler, maybe because he was a loner for most of his life. Or maybe just because he wanted to please his ego, showing everyone, himself in first place, that he can become one of the best.
Recently though, he was involved in a couple of tag team match, and he enjoyed the new experience.
"Half the effort, double the fun" He said to his girlfriend Mandi Morrison before stepping into his first match in the Duos Gauntlet qualifier with Rowyn Starr at Redemption 104. We all remember how it went, the fun was close to zero for him, the match was brutal with tons of punishment he felt for days after and, in the end, his tag partner was injured.
The second tag team match in his career didn't get any better. His tag team partner, someone he shouldn't have trust in first place, but he decided to help nonetheless out of his good heart, ignoring everyone's advice, betrayed him, leaving him at the mercy of his opponents.
"This time is going to be different babe..."
He looked at Mandi, sitting next to him on the flight from Chicago to Portland, location of Phoenix Wrestling's PPV The Awakening. She smiled, flaunting the perfect sweet smile that stole his heart when they first met, two months ago. That smile though came with some concerns, which she didn't hesitate to utter.
"I would hope Chris. But... What do you exactly know about your tag partner, Faith?"
"Well she's an exceptional striker, I believe she trained in MMA... She's very determined, having this fire burning inside, kinda like me... Well not really, we can say she has this sort of mean streak... But again, I guess that's a plus when the stakes are so high, don't you agree?"
Mandi shook her head, lightly laughing.
"That's what everyone can read on her roster page, or understand by watching five minutes of any of her matches. But do you REALLY know her? Can you trust her, or she's going to stab you in the back like Declan did? Do you remember what Geordie says about tag matches?"
Chris nodded, repeating her trainer's words.
"Know your partner, before you know your enemy"
He stared in her eyes.
"But that's beside the point Mandi. I may not know her, I never had any interaction with her on twitter... Hell I don't even know if Faith is her real name! But one thing I know, and I can bank on that, is that she wants to win every match, just like me. And this one makes no difference. There's a title shot on the line, and in my short time in this business, I learned that if there's something that can divide friends, or put perfect unknowns together, that's gold.
Just think about it, out of all the randomness of the teams that competed in this tournament, I was paired with a guy who got injured, and the same happened to her! I mean what were the chances? You gotta believe, this is like a sign of fate, two young, talented people find each other in the moment of need... This is like a match made in heaven, it's like how 80% of romantic comedy movies start, am I right?"
She glared, burning a hole through him. Chris bursts out laughing.
"Haha relax babe. I was meaning it on a strictly professional matter. What I was saying, is that you can't ignore how big of a coincidence this was. Maybe this is what it was meant to be, and all we gotta do is have a little... Faith!"
Nothing could save him from a slap to the back of the head this time. The expected reaction from Mandi though, didn't stop him from laughing at her.
"Very funny Chris..."
"I know, you tell me all the time Mandi. But really, I don't think i need to befriend her to make the best out of this chance. It won't be easy, that's for sure. But the common goal, the hunger that we both share is going to be our drive in this match. Even if we are the less experienced team. Even if we lack the chemistry Elena..."
Mentioning the Pale Queen name made him realize that he will have to face someone he likes to call his friend. Mandi knew how uncomfortable he always feel when he has to step into the ring with someone he grew acquaintance with. It happened before, it happened against Stacy. And now, he's going to face Elena De Draca, the first one who made him feel welcomed in PW, someone he never wasted a chance to hang out with after the shows. She even invited him to her wedding and, as crazy as it sounds, she convinced him to wear a tie! As long as he lasted, but still...
"... and Finn."
Mandi completed he sentence, as he was absorbed in his thoughts, looking at the clouds surrounding the plane.
"Uh?"
"You were talking about the chemistry Elena and Finn have"
"Yeah, that... They have been teaming up for quite sometime, and with great results. You gotta believe they are the favorites in this match, and it can't be any other way. They are awesome as single wrestlers, and they know each other so well... Me and Faith, we don't share that kind of bond, we literally don't know each other. And God knows how the mere idea that I may have to hit her upsets me..."
In all response, Mandi hit him with a light punch on the shoulder.
"Stop it Chris! You think that your friendship is going to stop her from kicking your ass? I can answer this for you, no! And it wouldn't stop me either, if I'm being honest. I mean this is the life we choose... Fight whoever is put in front of us, from our worst enemy, to our best friend. So stop complaining and start to deal with the fact that yes! You may have to punch her pretty porcelain face, as hard as he's going to punch you. After the match, nothing changes, but between the bells... It's a war."
It always amazed him how that girl, apparently so sweet and fragile, could easily show an aggressive side, almost like she turned a switch on. That's something Chris always lacked, the killer instinct when it comes to face friends. But her words somehow opened his eyes, now burning with a new found passion.
"You are right Mandi... No bad feelings Elena, but I can't hold anything back tonight. I know you won't either, so we should be cool. But you being such an amazing friend won't stop me from putting you down, if I need to. I will leave the nice guy Chris Andrew outside the Griswold Stadium, waiting for you to go celebrate after our match. After the wrestler Chris Andrew, the diamond in the rough of PW shined over the Pale Queen and her brother in arms. You know I played close attention to all your matches, I know how you move inside a ring, I know how I can counter your moves. And this change you announced on twitter? Whatever it is, I hope it makes you happy, because sure as hell, is not saving you from a loss tonight. You and your partner, Finn Whelan may be a great team, one of the best gracing the ring with God given chemistry and skills... But i have a feeling neither one of you wants to be in this match. For different reasons, but you both think you deserve something different. Something better probably... That's not my case, and I think it goes for Faith too. This is not a plan B for us, this is a chance to make a name for ourselves... I'm sorry it has to be at your expenses, you know how much I like you guys.
And don't think I forget about you, Collective... Forklift is quite the impressive guy, huge, strong, dominant... And Tony, smaller but equally ruthless. You guy are a tag team, that's why you joined PW, to obliterate the competition and get those straps around your waists. Tonight you will get a reality check. You're no longer facing Agnes Gertrude and Philip Kennedy. The Mother Of Violence and The Las Vegas Lariat...
Like... What the fuck, really? No mean to disrespect anyone but you beat up a 50-something woman and a 40 years old man... Where did you even find them? In a bingo hall? You helped them crossing the street and then challenged them to a match? No kidding you knocked them out, they probably had an heart attack after seeing Forklift that close... Or maybe it was the stench of his armpits... Do you even shower bro?"
Having completely lost him, not sure what he is actually talking about at this point, Mandi turns away, chuckling.
"Seriously guys, I'm all fun and games, but you are a force to be reckon with. I am well aware of this. You also have an ace up your sleeve, your buddy, the third wheel of the collective, Frankie Starlight. A wildcard waiting for the perfect chance to strike and leave his mark, helping you reaching your goal. And we all know how three way tag matches can get crazy and out of control.
Bottom line is this. I may play the fool, but I'm not one. Faith and I, we are the underdog, walking into this match. The ones not a single sane person would bet on. And it would be so sweet to overcome all the odds, to shock the world and earn the chance to challenge Aurora and Masaru Inoue.
Those titles will look pretty neat around our waist tag partner... Don't you think?
We can do this, trust me.
Have some Faith in Chris."
He grabbed the phone he wedged in between the two seat in the row in front of him to record this promo, turning the camera off and abruptly cutting to black
