Tyberius King sat quietly at the table. There wasn’t really anyone at the table he sat at that he conversed with regularly so he kept to himself and just listened intently as each person spoke. The amount of talent that surrounded him ensured that this was going to be one hell of a tournament. One where he hoped to be declared in the winner but it was a situation only time could tell. Right now the most important thing was making it out of the first round and learning more about his opponents right now. Then to his surprise a question was directed his way.
Reporter #1: Hello Ty, this is Jason Putnam of prowrestlingchronicle.com, I have a question and I think it’s one a lot of us are wondering. How come you are sitting in the chair and not Pharaoh Wadjethotep?
King adjusted his jacket and ran a hand over his face, almost to emphasize that it was his own and not that of a cobra.
Ty: Hello Jason, to answer your question I must ask one in return. Did Pharaoh Wadjethotep sign up for this tournament? The answer to that would be no. I did. That’s why I am sitting in this chair and entered in this very distinguished competition. The Pharaoh seems to make his way out in situations that cause his arrival. Those in which violence is called for beyond the normal means of a standard wrestling match or when provoked to an extreme point. Now that being said I understand that the rules of which this tournament are held are beyond that of a standard wrestling match and I’m sure plenty of people will have the intentions of provoking me. Still this is not the time for the Pharaoh to make an appearance, he has enough things to worry about. This one is mine.
Some of the people in the crowd weren’t sure how to take the answer as they almost found it odd that he was referring to himself and Wadjethotep as separate people when they belong to one body. Still King maintained his signature calm and sat in his chair upright and polite. Then another reporter stood up to ask him another question.
Reporter #2: Hey Ty, Rachel Anderson of catch wrestling spotlight, after listening to what your opponent had to say earlier how do you react to his lack of experience?
Ty took a look over at Jackson and gave a friendly smile.
Ty: I’m still going to treat him the same as if he were a multiple time world champion who could split your skull with a headlock. You can never overlook anyone, especially not in this tournament. Just because Jackson may not have the experience that others have had here doesn’t mean that there can’t be an upset. If I walk in there and treat this like it's already a win then I’m setting myself up for failure. I’m going to treat my opponent with the respect he deserves and just try to stick to a plan that hopefully leads me to victory.
A familiar reporter to King from his HELL days then sticks a hand out to grab Ty’s attention.
Reporter #3: Hola Ty, Julio Chavez of Primera Lucha here, I know you only like to look at tournaments as one match at a time but if you could give us some insight on the other competitors in this tournament and how tough do you feel the field is?
King smiled at his friend and while he usually did only focus on one match at a time he acquiesced and even replied in spanish for him.
Ty: For you my friend. This years Iron King might be one of the most stacked in tournament history. The amount of sheer talent in this is incredible. I could list names but that wouldn’t be fair to all of the people I might forget to include. Plus with the inclusion of many MMA fighters this year it truly offers a unique experience in this tournament that can’t really be captured anywhere else. This is something everyone in the combat sports world should be watching.
After a minute or two so that a translation can be made for the non Spanish speaking reporters another reporter stands up.
Reporter #4: Hello Ty, Charles Smith of British wrestling showcase, you mention how tough the competition is and how there is MMA competitors so how do you feel your odds are at winning this whole thing?
King took a drink before answering.
Ty: First my main focus here is beating Jackson. He’s my biggest threat at this moment so I need to stay aware of that and keep myself from thinking too broadly. Still though why would I enter this tournament if I felt I didn’t have a chance of taking it all? What did Jackson say earlier? That he knows enough to consider me one of the best in pro wrestling. Everyone knows my goal is to be considered the undisputed best wrestler on the planet. Winning this would put me one step closer to that claim.
A new reporter quickly jumps in.
Reporter #5: Hello Mr. King, Anders Kamara off MMA cyclone, you’ve mentioned how there are MMA fighters in this tournament and you just mentioned how you want to be the best wrestler. Although I find this a bit confusing because your style seems more MMA based than pro wrestling based. You also have two black belts in different martial arts so wouldn’t that make you more a mixed martial artist than a pro wrestler? Also there are some that have criticized you for not trying to make the jump to MMA with your background. What are your comments on all of this?
King took a drink and a breath as he collected himself to answer the question.
Ty: You can just call me Ty man. As for your other questions, I am a shoot style wrestler. Do I use my background in BJJ, Judo, and Sambo to my benefit? Of course. My style is more of a throwback to the early to mid half of last century if anything. As for the criticisms, I’m used to them at this point. It’s nothing new. At the end of the day I am a pro wrestler. That’s all I have ever wanted to be and what I am most proud to be. It’s the reason I entered this tournament. When I heard that it was essentially going to be pro wrestling vs. MMA I knew I had to sign up. I’m here to defend the faith. Some people snicker when they hear a pro wrestler goes into MMA. They say most of us can’t handle it. I am here to show that pro wrestling is indeed strong. I have a chance to represent my entire sport here on a stage where the world will be watching. Yes that is the way to look at it with the most pressure, but that just might be the motivation I need to give myself when the times get tough. There is no saying I quit here. When it’s all said and done I hope that you will never question pro wrestling again.
King spoke with fire, showing exactly what this meant to him. Another reporter stood up and called for him.
Reporter #6: Hey Ty, Brittney Perez of South Texas Graps, How do you feel about this being a grappling only match and have you prepared in any special way for it?
A slight smile came back to Ty’s face as this was a much more friendly question.
Ty: Honestly this is the best possible situation for me. While I’m still taking Jackson incredibly seriously there is something nice about knowing that this is a match where I’m going to feel right at home. As for special preparation, I just opened up the King Grappling school in Irkutsk in Russia. So everyday I’m home I’m in the gym on the mats teaching or practicing my grappling. It wasn’t specifically done with this match in mind but I can honestly say that when I’m on a mat I’m feeling fantastic right now.
King takes a break to take a sip of water.
Ty: Everyone I think that’s enough from me. I’ve taken up enough of everyone’s time. I’d just like to take this moment to thank Phoenix Wrestling for the opportunity and to wish Jackson the best of luck. May the better man win, and who ever loses has to buy the winner that beer.
Everyone has a short laugh before moving on.
