Following the loud Mariachi music filling the colorful Tijuana streets we found Chris Andrew sitting inside the club known as La Pulga, home, in just one more day, of Phoenix Wrestling’s Redemption 108. The Arizona Cruiserweight seemed to be enjoying is night, sitting at a table with his long time girlfriend, Mandi Morrison. The young couple was enjoying the typical ensemble of mexican musicians playing the traditional music. With a huge smile printed on his face, Chris was clapping his hands and swaying his upper body following the music rhythm, completely enraptured by the catchy tune. His girlfriend instead was still finishing her tacos, glancing up at him every now and then, visibly amused by his happy go lucky attitude, twenty-four hours before the huge six-men main event.
A rain of thunderous applauses followed the exhibition, something Chris contributed with an actual standing ovation, getting some funny looks from the other patrons.
“Sit down goofy ass!”
Chuckling, Mandi grabbed his arm and pulled him down. He gave her a quick kiss, his ears trying to catch the obscure foreigners words the singer was saying, before starting with the next song, one he found irresistible. He jumped back on his feet, literally dragging his embarrassed girlfriend in a wild and enthralling dance, something so unexpected and engaging that is quickly imitated by other customers, much to the band surprise.
After a good fifteen minutes in which Chris showcased all his dancing skills, they went back to their tables. He called the waitress, a cute land very twinkly latina, asking her for more tortilla chips and another round of… Dr Pepper.
“Chris, don’t you have a match tomorrow? A big one? I don’t think all the junk food you’ve been ingurgitating since our arrival her can possibly help you staying in shape.”
With a playful smile, he raised his shirt, showing her his still fit body. Mandi lightly blushed, looking around in an almost apologetic way for her boyfriend’s umpteenth burst of enthusiasm.
“Besides, I’m confident enough on our chances. I mean, me and Faith are kinda a good team, we are doing better every time we step inside the ring and this time, we have the champ on our side! I think we got this!”
She nodded in agreement, hiding a slight concern behind her pearl white smile.
“That may be true babe… But Aurora and Masaru already kicked your butt a couple of times.. And they team up with Veronica Valiant, someone who certainly doesn’t lack experience.”
“You’re calling her old?”
He stuck out his tongue, Mandi couldn’t help but laugh. One thing for sure, she never got bored with him.
“No but seriously, I am not saying this will be a walk in the park. If you look at the combined years in the ring, the difference is overwhelming. But Cassius, the Iron King himself, already proved that experience only matters till a certain point, then it all comes down to heart, skills and the right mindset. Besides, given the rules of the match, it only takes someone to pin the captain to win it. And I’d say Reed has quite the knowledge in that field.”
He took some time to grab himself some tortillas, dunk them in chilli sauce and bring them to his mouth, accompanying with his favorite soft drink.
“Me and Faith will take care of Aurora and Masaru, leaving the champ the honor to show, once and for all, that he’s better than Veronica. And earn ourselves another shot at the DUOS titles. And this time, we won’t fail.”
The mention of another title opportunity against Hell Is Awaiting almost made her shiver. Too fresh was the memory of the last two brutal encounters, where Chris always ended up battered and bruised.
“I don’t know babe… Maybe you should focus on your single career instead. They have more chemistry than you and Faith could ever get…”
“Are you kidding me babe? Yeah, they literally put me through hell and back before, but you know how they say… Third time’s a charm. And I know, deep inside, that if we get another chance, another title opportunity without those sneaky italians fucking around, if the match stays a fair contest, no matter how hard they will hit, no matter how much punishment I have to endure, I know for a fact that we will walk out with those titles around our waists.”
Despite all his confidence, Mandi didn’t seem too convinced. And she wouldn’t hesitate to express her feelings.
“I don’t know Chris… I always have a bad vibe every time you are around those two… They are scary, and twisted and....”
She let out a long sigh.
“I think they like to hurt people. I know it’s weird, but look at all the crazy stuff they say and do. Every time you stepped in the ring with them, we ended up spending the night at the hospital and…”
“And I always had the best nurse taking care of me the days after… Now that I think of it, it’s not such a bad deal, definitely worth some scratches and a headache”
This was his attempt to take that concerned look away from her face, and it worked. With the help of a light kiss on the cheek.
“I know you’re worried… And I can’t deny I am too. Only a fool wouldn’t be concerned of stepping in the same ring with guys like Masaru and Aurora. But you know me, I love to test myself with the very best… I LIVE for it.
And right now, Hell Is Awaiting is the best tag team in Phoenix Wrestling, surely one of the best in the world. I haven’t come this far to fail. You do remember my first match right?”
She nodded. She was there the day he made his professional debut back in November. Just like she was there for almost every match. And even if his attitude pre match attitude never changed, even if that smile that conquered her heart never really faded, he was no longer the rookie who was trying to impress the fans with crazy flips. He still was taking risks, but in a way more calculated way now. And, Faith, his impromptu tag team partner, was responsible for that. Her strict training regime, all her advices and the hours spent watching footage left a mark in Chris’ mentality, That was a solid fact.
“I am no longer that scared kid. I am no longer a rookie. I tasted the upper card, the main event even, and damn, it tastes good…”
He quickly bought some other tortilla chips to his mouth.
“Even better than these tidbits. It’s been a hell of a run for me here in PW, I fought Arkia Fisk, I battled Mason Daniels and Ron Swat, I stepped in the ring with Elena DeDraca and Finn Wheelan and actually beat them… No there’s no way I can stop now.
It’s just fitting that the show is called Redemption. Tomorrow I have my shot at redemption, another chance to prove that I am no fluke, that I am not the weak link in our team.
I have the chance to show everyone that I’m more than Faith’s sidekick. That I belong in the same ring with her, that I am a worthy tag team partner.
That the Duos Championship is my destiny.”
The mariachi band was still playing, but Chris was no longer interested in their music. Without even noticing, without realizing it he slid into that mindset his tag partner required. His eyes were burning with a new found fire. Less than twenty four hours from the Main Event of Redemption 108, less than a day from the Relevos Australianos six men tag match, Chris Andrew was ready to prove everyone that he could hang with the very best in Phoenix Wrestling.”
“Hell Is Waiting.
I can no longer do that.
I am done waiting,
Tomorrow, I’ll embrace my fate”
